The Second Congress of the Serbian Association for Cancer Research with international participation, titled “Cancer Research: Perspectives and Applications,” was held on October 2–3, 2015, at the Aeroclub in Belgrade. The primary aim of the SDIR-2 Congress was to provide a platform for scientists and clinicians from Serbia and abroad to learn about the latest findings in basic and translational cancer research, to exchange ideas and experiences, and to establish scientific collaborations.
The congress gathered eighty-nine participants from ten countries. The SDIR President, Dr. Zorica Juranić, opened the event. At the ceremonial opening, Assistant Professor Dr. Marina Nikitović, Assistant Director for Scientific Research and Educational Activities of the Institute for Oncology and Radiology of Serbia, also delivered a welcome speech. Over two days, thirty distinguished scientists from Serbia and abroad presented lectures organized into the following sessions: Immune Response and Its Modulation in Malignancies, Molecular Changes Underlying Cancer Development and Progression, Anti-Cancer Drug Research, and Clinical Oncology: The Era of Molecular Markers. We had the exceptional honor of hosting esteemed international guest speakers, including Prof. Yona Keisari (Tel Aviv University, Israel), Prof. Eric Solary (Gustave Roussy Institute, Paris, France), Principal Research Fellow Dr. Srđan Novaković and Prof. Barbara Jezeršek Novaković (Institute of Oncology, Ljubljana, Slovenia), Prof. Engin Ulukaya (Faculty of Medicine, Uludag University, Bursa, Turkey), and Prof. Konstantinos Dimas (University of Thessaly, Greece).
Within the poster session, young researchers presented thirty-three high-quality poster presentations. Thanks to financial support from EACR, the Awards Committee, composed of Principal Research Fellow Dr. Siniša Radulović, Prof. Gordana Konjević, and Senior Research Associate Dr. Radmila Janković, awarded three cash prizes for the best posters. The first prize was awarded to Nataša Stojanović from Germany for her poster presentation titled: "Histone Deacetylases (HDAC) 1 and 2 Integrate Mutant p53 Expression in Pancreatic Cancer” The second prize went to Aleksandra Nikolić from the Institute of Molecular Genetics and GeneticbnEngineering for her poster, "Promoter Analysis of the SMAD4 Gene in Patients with Solid Tumors” Merve Erkisa from Turkey received the third prize for her poster titled "Inhibition of Autophagy by Chloroquine Enhances the Cytotoxicity of Palladium (II)-Barbiturate Complex Against Prostate Cancer”
